![]() ![]() We even very carefully washed some cars (using the white nozzle). We wash concrete and brick pavements, vinyl and cement board siding, aluminum trim and gutters, faux stone, vertical brick, and wood trim. Testing pressure washers is the proverbial dirty job. Avoid or proceed with caution around delicate surfaces such a shade sails, insulated-glass windows, and outdoor furnishings built from soft materials like cedar or redwood.Watch your distance, and keep moving: The longer you keep the pressure washer’s stream focused in one place, and the closer it is to the surface, the more likely you are to cause damage. Also, pressure washing them can, in the worst case, send water inside their electrical box, leading to a corrosion-induced electrical failure. These objects are easily damaged by high pressure water. Avoid electrical: Don’t wash outdoor light fixtures, outlet receptacles covers, transformer boxes, doorbells, cameras, or backup generator cabinets.Their narrow spray angle provides more cutting action but is more likely to damage a surface. Reserve red and yellow nozzles only for the toughest cleaning. Use a green or a white nozzle for most jobs: the broad spray angle is less likely to damage surfaces. There are some key things you need to know to clean safely and effectively. Of the two, the risk is higher with gas-engine machines owing to the fact that they’re generally more powerful. However, pressure washers by their nature demand careful and deliberate handling, both for your sake and that of whatever you’re cleaning.īoth electric and gas pressure washers can damage surfaces. Pressure Washer SafetyĪll the machines we tested were safe to use, and we encountered nothing in them that caused us any concern. Also, gas engine pressure washers are best stored over the winter in the garage or an outbuilding. Today’s alcohol-containing gasoline quickly degrades and can damage fuel-system parts like carburetors and gas lines. Not to mention you have to be careful about fuel degradation. A gas engine is much louder than an electric motor, plus requires maintenance in the form of oil changes, replacement air filters, and a yearly check or change of the spark plug. ![]() The power afforded by a gas engine can drive a large and powerful pump, enabling these machines to shoot water to higher surfaces, clean heavier deposits of mold and dirt, and even slice thick deposits of mud from equipment such as farm machinery, trucks, and off-road vehicles. ![]() These are best suited to heavy-duty cleaning. As a bonus, they’re easy to store indoors during the winter. These are much quieter than gas-engine pressure washers, and they need hardly any maintenance. Their motor, cord, and ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) can get extremely hot. They’re not well suited to heavy-duty cleaning or long sessions in the height of the summer. They work well on wood and synthetic decks that need only gentle cleaning, all types of outdoor furniture, single-floor ranch houses, all types of exterior siding, and will clean the undercarriage of a pickup truck. They have enough power for general washing of outdoor surfaces. These are best suited for brief cleaning sessions, running from 15 to 30 minutes. One is not necessarily better than the other, but which you buy will depend on your cleaning needs, budget, and how you feel about maintaining the equipment you own. The pump that provides the high-velocity jet of water out of a pressure washer may be driven by a gas engine or an electric motor. Read our pressure washer background below, then the reviews, and keep scrolling to look at some recent machines that we haven't tested (yet) but that we will be moving through our test cycle in the weeks ahead. Our goal was to find out which are the kings of clean and, of those we tested, we list only the handful of the top performers below. We tested more than a dozen pressure washers, some powered by gasoline engines and others powered by electric motors. Bonus: these machines use less water per square foot to clean than spraying with a garden hose. They not only clean with the mechanical action of high-pressure water, they also scrub with the chemical action supplied from cleaners in the machines' onboard tanks (some machines siphon cleaner out of a nearby bucket). To keep the fun as you get ready for summer and make short work of dirty surfaces, turn to a pressure washer. All this nastiness seems to collect on any outdoor surface from your house's siding and outdoor furnishings to sidewalks and driveways. Outdoor and yard projects kick back into high gear as the weather turns warmer, but so does dirt, mildew, and mold. ![]() ![]() ![]() This can be seen by using the ideal gas law as an approximation. Many dogs can be made comfortable with conservative treatment however, arthritis, pain, and lameness often worsen over time. Conservative treatments include administration of joint supplements (Adequan ®, Cosequin ®), pain medications, weight loss, and rehabilitation. Conservative therapy does not cure arthritis caused by hip dysplasia, but is aimed at controlling the pet’s clinical signs (hip pain, lameness, reluctance to exercise). Many pets with hip dysplasia can be managed with conservative/medical therapy. In mature, otherwise healthy dogs with moderate to severe hip pain from hip dysplasia, we usually recommend a hip replacement over FHO, assuming there are no major client constraints or patient contraindications. Although biomechanically inferior to total hip replacement, the advantage of FHO is that it reduces pain without the long-term risks and commitment of a total hip replacement. For active dogs, return to high levels of activity is more variable. Due to the fact that the hip joint is removed, dogs that have this procedure often have an abnormal gait at the walk and run, even in the absence of pain. Instead, a “false” joint made of scar tissue is allowed to develop. In this procedure, the painful hip joint is surgically removed however, a replacement joint is not placed. There is no evidence of degenerative joint disease (arthritis).įemoral head ostectomy (FHO) is another procedure used to treat dogs with pain from hip dysplasia. The head of the femur (arrow) is poorly seated within the acetabulum, indicating poor hip joint congruity. Radiographs (X-rays) of a juvenile dog with subluxation of both hip joints secondary to hip dysplasia. Total hip replacements are usually very successful for the lifetime of your pet, and active dogs are able to resume a high level of activity for the remainder of their lives. The advantage of total hip replacement is that it eliminates pain and lameness and provides normal range of motion and gait (how your pet walks) by removing the affected joint and replacing it with a prosthetic (artificial) joint that is biomechanically similar to the original joint. This procedure allows your pet to keep its own hip joint, and eliminates pain and lameness by correcting the laxity within the hip joint.ĭogs older than 12 months that have osteoarthritis or dislocation of the hip joint secondary to severe hip dysplasia can be treated with either a total hip replacement (THR) or femoral head ostectomy (FHO). Young dogs that show hip pain early in life (usually 6-12 months of age) that have no evidence of osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease) on pre-operative radiographs (X-rays) may qualify for a triple pelvic osteotomy (TPO). What are the treatment options for hip dysplasia?ĭepending on your pet’s age, physical condition, and degree of hip pain/lameness, there are several surgical treatment options. Radiographs (X-rays) of a normal dog’s pelvis and hips. ![]() Many dysplastic dogs will show these signs early in life (6-12 months of age), but some dogs do not show signs of pain until they are older. Owners report that their dogs are lame after exercise, run with a “bunny-hopping” gait, are reluctant to rise or jump, or aren’t as active as other puppies. If left untreated, dogs with hip dysplasia usually develop osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease).ĭogs with hip dysplasia commonly show clinical signs of hind limb lameness, pain, and muscle wasting (atrophy). This laxity causes stretching of the supporting ligaments, joint capsule, and muscles around the hip joint, leading to joint instability, pain, and permanent damage to the anatomy of the affected hip joint. The abnormal development of the hip joint that occurs in young dogs with dysplasia leads to excessive hip joint laxity (looseness). ![]() There is no single cause of hip dysplasia rather it is caused by multiple factors, some of which include genetics and nutrition. It occurs commonly in large breed dogs such as Labrador retrievers, German Shepherds, Rottweilers, and Saint Bernards, but it can occur in dogs of any breed and size, and even in cats. Canine hip dysplasia is the abnormal development and growth of a dog’s hip joint. ![]() ![]() This is also a lesser problem with pneumatic staplers although you have the option of increasing or decreasing the "power" of your air stapler according to the type of wood stretcher you are stapling onto by setting your air regulator to a higher or lower operating air pressure. ![]() ![]() So, if the wood has "hard spots" in it also, it is natural for the staple to meet with more resistence than in the soft wood spots and it won't go in completely. If you are driving a staple into a "soft spot", it will probably seat itself properly because the spring setting of the stapler which causes the "power" of the stapler to drive in the staple is consistent and set by the factory to hammer, at the same strength, every staple you attempt to drive into any wood.
